Duterte was speaking to an Agence-France Presse reporter who asked him how he would respond to Obama if asked about his recent crackdown on drug addicts in Philippines at a summit in Laos on Tuesday. Duterte told the reporter, "You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum. We will be wallowing in the mud like pigs if you do that to me.”
The Philippines president has been publicly criticized by human rights activists, diplomats, and the United Nations over his recent crackdown of drug addicts in his country which has led to 2,400 deaths in two months.
Since taking office in June, Duterte has insulted the Catholic Church, by telling them "...don't fuck with me...", and the US ambassador to Manila, by calling him a "gay son of a whore" after they commented on his drug crackdown.
In response to Duterte's comments, Obama said at a news conference at the end of the G20 summit in Hangzhou, China, "What I’ve instructed my team to do is to talk to their Philippine counterparts to find out is if this in fact a time where we can have some constructive, productive conversations."
Duterte, Obama, and other world leaders will be attending the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Vientiane, Laos from September 6 to 8.
